If you are staying at Club MAC Alcudia in 2017, you may want to check out Majorca’s most sacred site – the picturesque Lluc Sanctuary.
Fascinating history
Majorca has been Christian for centuries. The religion was first-introduced to the Island during the latter part of Roman rule. Despite falling into Muslim hands for centuries, Christianity continued to thrive across the largest Balearic Island and today, Majorca is fiercely Roman Catholic.
This means that you can find a variety of breath-taking historic churches and monasteries throughout Majorca. If you want to stay close to our resort, you could check out the Sant Jaume church. Based in Alcudia’s old town, this house of worship is known for its glorious 19th Century Baroque architecture.
Lluc Sanctuary
But if you fancy going further afield, you could visit Lluc Sanctuary. Nestled within the picturesque Serra de Tramuntana Mountains, Lluc Sanctuary is just 40 minutes’ drive away from Alcudia. Considered Majorca’s most sacred site, it features a museum (open every day from 10am to 2pm except Saturdays) and Botanical Gardens (open weekdays from 10am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm).
Lluc has been a pilgrimage site since the 13th Century. During this time, an Arab boy who had recently converted to Christianity discovered a dark wooden statue of the Virgin Mary in a cleft of rock inside a cave at the site. The statue was placed in a local church but miraculously returned to the cave three times. The local villagers saw this as a message from God, so they built a house for the statue, which eventually became Lluc Monastery.
Today, you can visit the statue, now encrusted with precious stones and known as La Moreneta, at Lluc Sanctuary. At the site, you’ll also find a museum that displays ceramics, chalices, and coins once used by the monks who lived there. The museum also features stunning paintings by the 20th-century Majorcan artist Josep Coll.
Bardolet.
You can visit Lluc Monastery for 5€, which is particularly known for its daily choir concerts. At 11 am, the 40-member Es Blauets choir, founded in 1531, delights listeners with beautiful religious hymns, offering you a unique experience. You should also check out the Sanctuary’ Botanical Gardens, which features charming rockery and exotic plants from around the Balearics!
Visit Club MAC
If you decide fly to Majorca to visit religious attractions like Lluc Sanctuary, book at room at Club MAC Alcudia. We are an outstanding family holiday resort, based near the charming port town of Alcudia. Boasting stunning landscapes, fantastic weather – with average temperatures reaching as high as 26°C in summer, amazing cultural attractions and well-paved roads, you can have a great cycling holiday in Alcudia, seeing the best this region has to offer as you ride on by.
Renting bikes
You can find bike rental services across the Alcudia area. We should note that prices vary, depending on the bike frame you want and the duration of your hire. You may find that some services charge you extra for pedal hire, but if you bring your own, they might be willing to fit them for free.
Cycling routes
Once you have rented a bike, you can go off and explore the Island at your leisure. If you want somewhere to start, why don’t you try one of Majorca’s popular cycling routes?
Lluc Monastery route
If you’re new to the art of cycling you might want to start with a nice ride along the Lluc Monastery route. This 30 mile ride is the perfect path to take for your first trip up into Majorca’s stunning mountains.
You start with a nice slow climb up the famous Tramutana mountain range via the gorgeous Coll de sa Batalla route. Then you arrive at the ancient Luc Monastery, where you have the chance to look around and experience traditional Spanish culture before taking a nice descent down the coll-de-femenia into the charming town of Pollenca.
Cap de Formentor lighthouse route
Are you more of a beach person? If you are then you might want to think about trying the Cap de Formentor lighthouse route instead.
A 25 mile ride, the path starts and ends in the same town as the Lluc Monastery route; the lovely settlement known as Pollenca. It’s a bit of a climb as it takes you up into the hilly terrain of a peninsula before you arrive at the pinnacle of your ride; the world famous Cap de Formentor lighthouse, which is well worth a few hours of your time. Along the way this route allows you to pass by some of the most epic stretches of sand that Majorca has to offer.
Around the orange groves route
However, if you’re looking for something a little quieter and more peaceful there’s only one route you should take. This 25 mile loop route takes you around the stunning orange groves of Majorca.
You start and finish in the hard-not-to-love traditional town of Llucmajor. Then the path will take you down some of the quietest little country roads in Majorca, whilst giving you the opportunity to ride through the citrus groves and small fincas the island has become famous for.
Around Alcudia
But if you want to stay closer to the resort, you can find plenty of good cycling routes near Alcudia. You could try the 30 mile route through the S’Albufera Nature Park, for instance. Here, you’ll be able to take a nice easy ride, along well-paved paths, viewing the fascinating flora and fauna that calls these wetlands home. You may want to watch out for the European Turtle, which is incredibly rare!

Before you fly out, find out how much items generally cost in Euros, the local currency, so you can make transactions competently. As a baseline, £1 generally equals 1.1€ to 1.3€, but the exchange rate can fluctuate. You can change your currency into Euros at the reception in our Marte building.
Follow the etiquette
Majorca has its own commonly understood rules on how you should act in public. Familiarise yourself with Majorcan etiquette, so that you don’t appear rude to locals, sticking out. When greeting people, for example, shake hands with men, but kiss women on the cheek. If in doubt, ask the person you are talking to about appropriate etiquette. They’ll appreciate that you’re going to a lot of effort to fit in.
Embrace traditions
People like it when others show an interest in their culture. When in Majorca, try embracing Spanish traditions, so you can learn more about how to fit in. Performed in churches throughout Alcudia, this is a traditional liturgical drama and Gregorian chant, which is just amazing to witness.

As the Park is based off the mainland, it can only be reached by sea. So why should you take a trip to Sa Dragonera?
Flora and fauna
The Park is famous for its stunning, unique flora and fauna. Sa Dragonera is particularly known for its native wall lizard population, a creature that cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. It also boasts the largest Eleonora’s falcon population in the Balearic Islands and a wide range of sea-faring birds, such as the Balearic shearwater, which is endemic to this archipelago.
Sa Dragonera is also home to five species of bat, some of which are migrant. The Park includes the surrounding waters, so when you head to Sa Dragonera, you can check out the Posidonia oceanic prairies, which possess a wide range of marine species and coral communities. Sa Dragonera’s flora is just as impressive as its fauna, with 361 plant species, 18 of which are native to the Balearics.
