Club MAC Alcudia Minigolf

Since 2013, family hotel Club MAC Alcudia has been a member of Hoteles Amigos, an initiative created by the Spanish Committee of children’s charity UNICEF.

Protecting children

Club MAC is located in Alcudia on the sun-drenched island of Majorca, Spain. Its facilities and activities programme makes it one of Alcudia’s friendliest family-orientated hotels. With over 30% of the hotel’s population made up of children, Club MAC goes above and beyond to provide a holiday that they will never forget.

In-line with the hotel’s child-friendly theme, it joined UNICEF’s Hoteles Amigos initiative two years ago. Together with the Spanish tourism sector for the protection of children, UNICEF has helped fight against the commercial sexual exploitation of children in travel.

The initiative works by companies within the tourism sector becoming stakeholders in the charity who then collaborate with UNICEF on programmes of protection and defence of the rights of children.

Responsible tourism

Companies of all sizes within the sector, including small and large hotel chains, lodgings and other businesses can participate in the movement of responsible tourism.

Those companies that have a presence in Spain and also in other countries are committed to signing the ECPAT code (against the commercial sexual exploitation of children) and to put in place a plan of action, which is supported by UNICEF and the World Tourism Organisation.

Hotels in Spain and other establishments within the tourism sector are seen as platforms for the communication and mobilisation of customers and employees with differing actions. They form part of the respect and promotion of the rights of children and against the commercial sexual exploitation of children in travel.

The below statistics explain why Club MAC is part of the Hoteles Amigos programme:

  • 1.8 million children are exploited in the commercial sex industry
  • It is estimated that 1.2 million children are victims of trafficking every year
  • More than 130 million girls and women have undergone some form of female genital mutilation in the 29 countries of Africa and the Middle East in which these harmful practices are more common
  • It is estimated that more than 1 billion children live in territories affected by armed conflict.
  • Up to 300,000 boys and girls, in more than 20 countries, are doomed to live the war becoming child soldier, cooks, suicide, porters of explosives, messengers, spies and sex slaves
  • Approximately 143 million children have been orphaned by one or both parents
