Free things to do with your children during lockdown
At Club MAC Alcudia, we like to focus on the happiness in any situation. And while much of the world is currently locked down, or at least restricted, due to the coronavirus pandemic, there is much fun to be had at home with the family.
While we don’t know how long this will last, and when we’ll all get to enjoy our holidays this year, we do know these ten things to do with the kids will guarantee some smiles! In the meantime, take care and stay well.

Lots of celebs and businesses are offering free ways to entertain and educate during this unprecedented situation.
- PE with The Body Coach Joe Wicks
Joe Wicks is a world-renowned fitness expert and is offering free PE classes via his YouTube channel. Normally, his fitness plans cost around £100 for three months, so this is not only fun for all the family, it’s a great freebie. Daily views are in the millions and any profits he gets are going straight to support the NHS.
- Wildlife questions answered by TV presenter and naturalist Steve Backshall
On Facebook, Steve is doing live wildlife Q&As so your kids can ask all their burning questions. Steve is best known for presenting wildlife programmes on the BBC and is a conservation expert and author. Not only is it fun, it’s a way to cram in some science and geography too.
- Maths classes with Carol Vordeman
Brainbox and national treasure Carol Vordeman is waiving the £2/wk fee for her online classes. The Maths Factor will be free of charge for as long as schools are off. The classes target four to 11-year olds, and all the content correlates with the national curriculum so you know the kids will be doing something useful. Access the classes here.
- Listen together to a free David Walliams audio book
Kids author and TV star David Walliams is releasing 30 daily audio stories totally free for 30 days. In a Tweet he said: “Those stuck at home with their kids may be able to relate to The World’s Worst Children. Find the stories here.
- Enjoy a free science lesson with CBeebies presenter Maddie Moate
TV presenter Maddie Moate is offering science classes every day at 11am on her YouTube channel. If you can’t make 11am (due to everything else going on!), the classes are available to watch afterwards too. Catch them here.
- Free language lessons for children
Squeeze an extra Spanish or French lesson in from Rosetta Stone. The educational software company is offering free language courses to kids for three months. The usual cost of these is £50 for three months, so it’s definitely something to consider while the kids can’t go to school. Choose from French, Italian, German or Spanish and you can sign up from multiple email addresses if you have more than one child. See here for more info.
- Access fun SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) app for free
Sir Linkalot is a SPAG app that offers fun ways for your kids to keep on top of their grammar and spelling. It usually costs £6.99 per month, but it’s free until 12 June 2020. All you need to do is sign up to the app’s mailing list here, and they’ll send you an access code.
- Meditate together as a family with Headspace or Calm
Two very popular apps – Headway and Calm – are offering meditations for free during the coronavirus crisis. Usually it costs between £50 and £60 to subscribe to apps like these so take advantage of the free content to make sure the kids have some calm. Access ‘Calm Kids’ or ‘Soothing Meditations’ on the Calm app or use the collection Headspace have called ‘Weathering the Storm’.
- Have an Audible story time session for free
Audible has released a number of children’s stories for free. They will all be available for as long as the schools are off and will save you a subscription fee of between £11 and £15 a month. The vast array of stories includes Scarlett Johansson reading Alice in Wonderland and Peter Dennis reading Winnie the Pooh. Classics like Frankenstein, Jane Eyre and Rome and Juliet are also available.
