When booking a holiday, you will generally see a star rating next to the resort or hotel. And while it may seem that all star ratings are comparable, the reality is they differ from country to country.

Not only does every country have different criteria for their star ratings, but tour operators and local governments do too. Club MAC Alcudia offers an all-inclusive 3-star hotel on the beautiful island of Mallorca.

What does an all-inclusive 3-star hotel rating mean in Spain?

In Spain, the star rating for a hotel is determined by the local government. Each hotel and resort must fill out a form for the Balearic government. This covers the facilities and amenities they offer. Based on this information, the government uses a points system to determine the star rating.

In Mallorca, basic facilities that reach a 3-star standard include air conditioning, heating, WiFi, internet terminals in the hallways, 24-hour reception, seating areas and laundry services. In the rooms, 3-star facilities include air conditioning, bedside tables, mirror, TV, safe, a desk, plug sockets and shampoo are required. A three-star hotel like Club MAC also offers buffet services for meals.

To reach four-star status, a hotel or resort must also offer a public bar, luggage services, 24 hour laundry services, double bedrooms with lounge, a separate toilet and shower, bedside lights, WiFi in each room, a minibar in the room, sheets changed at least twice a week and a shoe polishing service.

For five stars, hotels must also offer luggage services to the room, porters, magazines, sewing kits, welcome gifts, a turn-down service, a 12-hour laundry service, make-up mirror, a phone in the bathroom, bathrobe and slippers, two pillows each and 24-hour room service.

Other factors taken into consideration by the government when determining star ratings include facilities in public areas, disabled access, car parking, extra services, swimming pools, entertainment, spa, events facilities, technology and energy efficiency.

Club MAC is a 3-star family friendly hotel resort

Booking direct with Club MAC via our website is still the most cost-effective way to guarantee your sun-soaked Alcudia holiday for 2020. As an all-inclusive three-star resort, Club MAC also offers a comprehensive and varied buffet breakfast across all three restaurants. In the evening, we have a buffet-style themed dinner, again at all of our restaurants. At lunch time, we have a smaller buffet style meal available in two restaurants, as well as the Lake Burger Bar. Families can also help themselves to ice-cream, slushies and ice pops for the children from the bars.

We have 24-hour facilities on site, including reception and security teams. Club MAC also has a great bunch of skilled entertainers working hard to keep everyone having fun throughout the day and evening.

How does a three-star hotel in Spain compare with other star ratings?

In Spain, one-star hotels and resorts have only very basic rooms. Usually there are shared facilities and bathrooms. One-star resorts do not offer facilities like swimming pools, communal lounges, reception services or TVs. Rooms are small with no balcony access. Food at a one-star Spanish hotel will be simple with limited choices and often is only a bed and breakfast basis.

Two-star resorts offer basic rooms, sometimes with en-suite facilities. Many hotels at this star-rating will have a swimming pool, TV and a larger food choice at an on-site restaurant. They are often located on the seafront, but generally offer far fewer facilities than a three-star hotel.

When you move up to a four- or five-star resort in Spain you can expect to pay significantly higher prices. They will usually have larger bedrooms, room service and a greater number of extras. For example, in some five-star hotels, you can expect concierge service round the clock.

Club MAC Alcudia offers a balance between a wide array of all-inclusive food and drink, different bedroom configurations, and on-site entertainment. It’s important to realise that all-inclusive pertains to our restaurant, bar and snack bar offerings only. For a full run-down of extra facilities that are not covered by the all-inclusive price, check out our earlier blog.
