The history of Alcudia

Yet when you come to Alcudia you come to a place that is steeped in history and tradition. Alcudia has existed since Roman times. Even back then the strategic position of the walled city of Alcudia was recognised as vital to protecting Roman interests in what was then Imperial Spain.

However Alcudia is a stone’s throw away from the Mediterranean. This posed a risk to any prince, king, emperor etc. who chose to occupy Majorca for themselves. Fast forward several hundred years and this risk was recognised by King Jaume II. He decided to build a six metre wall boasting 26 towers along the 1.5 kilometre perimeter of the town to protect it from those who would wish to invade the island.

How can you tour the ancient walls of Alcudia?

That wall still stands around the perimeter of the historic centre of Alcudia today. Along with the remains of the Roman city of Pollentia it was declared a Conjunt Històric Artístic (Artistic Historical Site) in 1974. If you want to learn about the history that has shaped this unique tourist destination make sure you take some time to tour the wall at some point when you stay at Club MAC Alcudia.

How can you do so? It’s pretty easy since the wall is open all the time. If you want to see the wall in all its glory take a day to walk around its perimeter on foot. It’s a great way to check out this relic of Majorca’s history whilst introducing yourself to the town.
